2016. Graphite on paper. Frame: 1.54 x 1.45m
Yinchuan Biennale commission, curated by Bose Krishnamachari
In making negative drawings that reference political press photos, the artist wanted to address memories where the personal and political intertwined; to re-look at these familiar yet disembodied images, reconstruct them in a new place of beginnings and infinitely defer their meanings. The drawing references a meeting between Indonesia’s founding president Sukarno and the People’s Republic of China’s first Premier and Foreign Minister Zhou Enlai in 1965, a tumultuous year in the history of Sino-Indonesia relations.
The viewer is invited to use her mobile device, with invert settings turned on, to see the positive image. Shifting between the modality of drawing and photography, the artist reflects viscerally upon the imagery of his personal history, seeking agency.
等著你回來 is "Waiting for you" in Chinese, and title of a popular song in Shanghai in the 1940s.
