Concerning discussions of ‘identity’ within the academia, I believe that the artist is able to present the search for and connection with ‘home’ in a more visceral manner. Boedi’s most recent work expresses his search for his cultural home. Indonesian academic Suryandinata Leo, who researches into the Chinese diaspora, pointed out that during the time when Indonesian Chinese were forcibly severed from their cultural roots, their connection to their ethnic popular culture was through Chinese martial arts novels and martial arts movies. Boedi’s work for this exhibition addresses, reflects upon, and critiques this link, embedded into the Indonesian Chinese cultural history, and an indelible personal experience for the artist.
