Artist statement
My art is deeply tied to diasporic notions of culture, identity and belonging. It draws on my ancestral beginnings—their move from China to Nanyang, my childhood migration from Indonesia to Singapore, and the socio-political forces that displaced and rooted us in new lands. At the core of my practice is a contemplation on the manifold yet elusive meanings of house, home and homeland.

Guided by the idea of a subject who is “born translated”—who moves, converts, transmits and transforms across different forms and contexts—I make art across media, from experimental photography, film and architectural installations, to bioart and live art. Emphasising process and bodily engagement, I engage with otherness—of people and places, stories and objects—that I come across.

In multicultural Singapore, amidst Southeast Asia’s diversity of peoples and languages, I feel drawn to the blurring of signs and symbols, where the border between words and images dissolves to birth new hybrid experiences.

The intersection of art and science is a crossroad of knowledge where interdisciplinary reflexivity happens; it sparks new categories of understanding. Through art-science projects, I learn to figure the world differently and translate the newfound perspectives into material poetics.
